Amateurs might want to consider the value of their images before someone else does. This happened to one of our own PicScout team members. Her husband, an amateur photographer, photographed our team member while they were on vacation. Weeks later, after returning home, they received a promotional mailing from the lodge where they had stayed. In their advertisement about the lodge’s many assets, the company had incorporated a slightly altered version of the very photograph our team member’s husband had taken. It was discovered that the lodge had acquired the image through Flickr without permission. The lodge thought the amateur’s image was valuable enough to promote their business, while the amateur photographer hadn’t considered the importance of getting credit for his image until it was too late.

Amateur images from sources like Flickr, Picasa, Photobucket, and others offer refreshing content; and when an easy connection between buyers and amateur sellers can be made, images are properly credited and can be monetized appropriately.

As I’ve been writing here for some weeks, PicScout is on a determined course where every image gets its credit – providing much needed solutions for creative professionals and image owners. This means every image is usable, saleable, and trackable – this holds true for both the most seasoned photographer and the amateur alike. So, we’re anxious to hear, look at, explore and contribute to the state of the art and the future as presented at the 6Sight conference – we anticipate quite a dialogue as our industry continues to undergo fundamental changes in terms of how images are found, used and monetized.

This panel will discuss techniques buyers can use to track down images and what agencies can do to make it easier.

The panel will discuss the potential passage of orphan works legislation in the 111th Congress and the probable impacts, demonstrate several existing technologies and consider best practices for orphan work searches.
